Boat shed sleepout in rural Tararua catches eye of ADNZ judges

A humble boat shed sleepout in Herbertville, Tararua has beaten all comers to win the only 2021 Taranaki/ Whanganui/Manawatu Regional ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Award.

Michael Holmes of Holmes Architecture won the award for the Boat Shed, a companion building to an existing Herbertville bach on a sweeping expanse of remote rural coastine.

To protect the panoramic views of the original bach, the Boat Shed was given a generous physical separation from the existing building. This allowed both buildings to maintain their own individual architectural identity.

While functional and utilitarian, the Boat Shed has refined but subtle detailing, such as recessed gutters, a polycarbonate facade, generous glazing, cedar panelling and a well-resolved internal layout.

The interior of the sleepout is an exercise in space efficiency, with a compact but functional kitchen/bathroom/laundry all integrated within a generous living space.

Large bi-fold doors open to an expansive view, with the level deck almost doubling the size of the internal footprint when open. A retractable library ladder provides access to a generous loft.

The project also won the 2021 Regional Resene Colour in Design Award. The judges said the classic architectural forms and rich timbers have been effortlessly elevated with smoked oranges, deep greens and chalky whites to blend the home into the raw, rural coastline.

“The fresh, robust metal cladding houses the beautiful, stripped back detailing, which creates ease within this humble abode. Smooth, matte finishes have been used to ground the home in its natural environment,” they said.

Gregory Watts, CEO of Architectural Designers New Zealand, said the Boat Shed is a wonderful addition to the coastline.

“It really is something special to behold. The original bach and the Boat Shed work harmoniously together to create a generous and private holiday home for its owners.”
